Print on Demand has Changed Self Publishing

Joseph Coupal - Tuesday, August 06, 2013

Recently an article was published in Forbes Magazine on the advantages of printing on demand for self publishers. We thought we would share the important points from that article with you:

Self-publishing in general is turning the traditional publishing industry on its head, but print-on-demand services, or POD, are making every writer’s dream of becoming a published author achievable. There are some obvious reasons for this:  the out-of-pocket cost of printing one book at a time is relatively less expensive than taking a chance on a 1,000-book run.

Not long ago, an aspiring book writer rejected by traditional publishing houses had only one alternative: vanity publishing. For $5,000, $10,000, or more, an author could have his manuscript edited and published, provided that they agreed to buy a few thousand or  more copies themselves. Often these book copies ended up not being used.  Digital publishing and print on demand have significantly reduced the cost of producing a book.

Some believe the advantages of POD for authors is saving the publishing industry.

Author Control

Print on Demand is not just for authors who can’t find a publisher. Author Mark Edwards self-published one book The Magpies after working with a publishing house to publish another. For him it was a matter of expediency.

“When I finished The Magpies I wanted to get it out quickly, partly because I wanted to build momentum before my other book came out.”  The Magpies has sold over 130,000 copies and has been in the top 10 for over two months.

A Time article reported that e-book self-publishing is growing at four times the rate of other forms of self-publishing – and some authors are making more money that way.

There are many advantages of print on demand including access and author control, and affordability. Many authors are jumping onto POD publishing as a low-cost, low-labor way to turn their books into profitable products.

Self-Publishing Gets Your Book in the Hands of Readers

Joseph Coupal - Tuesday, April 23, 2013

Do you have an idea that you would like to get into a printed book? A publishing company can help a developing writer publish a book. However, more want-to-be authors are turning to self-publishing as their preferred way of publishing a book. So how about using a publishing company that offers self-publishing services as well.

These days, it’s easier than ever to get your story to the people who want to read it. With the rise of self-publishing and all forms of indie publishing, you can do it yourself. People choose self-publishing for many reasons, the biggest reason being that they would prefer to maintain control of their book. Many writers prefer to control their own work from an artistic and business standpoint.

Beyond this, there are plenty of other reasons writer would prefer to self-publish:

  • Lower publishing cost.
  • Self-publishing allows an author to maximize their books ‘earnings.
  • Self-publishing allow you to market to a small, specific demographic that you have direct access to.

Or, perhaps a traditional publisher has turned you down. If you are unknown, a publisher may not take an interest. There have been plenty of recent New York Times bestsellers who were initially turned down by publishing houses and became self-published books. In fact, half of Amazon’s top 10 best-sellers last year started as self-published books.

Self-published books used to bear the vanity press stigma and steep costs but now, independent publishing is quickly becoming the preferred road to readers for many authors. Self-publishing is getting easier and the success stories are becoming more prevalent, causing self-publishing to gain in popularity.

Short Run Book Printing is Economical and Green

Joseph Coupal - Tuesday, April 09, 2013

There are many advantages to using short run book printing. If you have a self published book, but a small budget, short run printing is a great way to get your book on the market without breaking the bank. By using short run printing, you can create high quality books in quantities as low as 11, 100, 250 or 500.

Short run books are an excellent marketing tool for publishers and self publishers because it makes test marketing less expensive and easy. No matter what your reasons for needing smaller quantities of your print materials, short run printing is a great way to go because short run printing gives you quality printed books that are affordable.

Printing lower quantities is an eco-friendly approach as well. Better to have too few copies and have more printed quickly than have too few.  This means less waste. With short run printing, there is no reason to produce more copies than you need. If your book is targeting a small audience or if you are not sure how many books you will need, short-run book printing could be your best choice.

Renaissance in Publishing – Self Publishing

Joseph Coupal - Tuesday, February 05, 2013

If you want to be a published writer and you don't mind publishing yourself, these are very good times. One recent survey found that the number of self-published books in the U.S. has almost tripled in the past six years. As eBooks become easier to create and distribute, more and more services are popping up to help you do that.

There has always been a stigma associated with self-publishing. Five years ago self-publishing was seen as the option of last resort. It was seen as the option for failed writers. And the publishing industry held that view, and even writers held that view.

But that's changing now. Self-publishing is now becoming the option of first choice for many writers. And even traditional publishers now have new found respect for self-publishing. They're using the self-publishing bestseller lists to troll for new authors to acquire.

Traditionally, publishers are in the business of selling books. So they seek to acquire books and authors who they think have the greatest commercial potential. But the challenge here is they really don't know which books are going to go on to become bestsellers. Only readers know that.
And so in the attempt to only choose the cream of the crop, many potential breakout bestsellers are being excluded. And those books are now going to self-publishing.

It is possible that we are at the very early stages of renaissance in publishing. Over the next few years, readers will have the opportunity to discover and enjoy more great books than ever before, more books that match their unique interests, and books will become more available to more readers around the world.

Self Publishing is Often the Best Option for Authors

Joseph Coupal - Tuesday, June 26, 2012

In the past, the general feeling towards self publishing was leaning toward negative. There was, and still is in some cases, a certain level of trepidation when approaching a book that has gone straight from the author to the consumer, skipping the middle man entirely.

Mainly, this negativity stems from the belief that authors opt to self publish if they have been unsuccessful with traditional publishers. But today, this is less true as self-publishing has gone from the last option to the best option.

For one thing the book market has been on a steady decline with the revolutions of the technology market, and one of the developments that has kept reading relevant is eBook readers.

With e-books potentially leading the market from now on, traditionally published and self-published writers are on a level playing field.

In such a case, self publishing can hold many advantages above traditional publishing; a larger margin of the profit will make its way to your pocket for one thing, and there's also a certain level of freedom that accompanies managing your own book publishing.

Self-publishing allows book writing to be approached on a more personal level, even if the books aren't likely to achieve commercial success, authors can still connect with an audience on a much smaller scale.

If you, as an author, find yourself opting for or leaning toward self-publishing, contact The Country Press.

Self Publishers Make Money

Joseph Coupal - Tuesday, May 29, 2012

To celebrate ten years of the self-publishing business, there are some interesting sales statistics exploring self publishing over the last ten years.

All publishers should be aware of the growing business of self-publishing.

Bob Young, CEO of a self publishing website had this statement: “There has often been a stigma placed on self-publishing that says the self-published author doesn’t make any money – that they won’t be successful. In our ten-year history, we have paid out over $36 million dollars to our self publishing authors proving that this stigma is outdated. It is now easier than ever to sell works in all sorts of formats, in all sorts of markets, on all sorts of devices, in some cases instantly. Publishing is changing. The concept of a book is changing.”

Statistics on the last 10 years of self-publishing from just one company:

  • $36+ million earned by self publishers on a self publishing web site, $1.3 million of which was earned by the top 5 sellers.
  • 45% of fist time authors published a second book
  • 1.9 million+ registered buyers
  • 677,403 published E-books
  • USA published 949k books
  • 56% of authors earned over $25,000 - 28% earned over $50,000 - 15% earned over $100,000
  • 100,000+ titles on premier retail channels like Amazon.com

50 Shades of Self Publishing

Joseph Coupal - Tuesday, April 10, 2012

First-time author E.L. James was offered $5 million dollars last month for the movie rights to her self-published novel, Fifty Shades of Grey. This self published trilogy has taken off in print and in e-book form.

The novel's success may also have something to do with our collective love of the underdog. The publishing history of Fifty Shades of Grey is a rags-to-riches story. But in America we have had so many self made, self publishers, Mark Twain among them.

Self-publishing success stories are an American tradition, one in which the revolutionary/genius/outsider triumphs. From Stephen Day in 1640 who used the first printing press to publish editions of the Bay Psalm Book to Ben Franklin’s self-published paperbound pamphlet Poor Richard's Almanac. And in 1776, Thomas Paine self published "Common Sense," that sold over 500,000 copies and helped start the American Revolution.

Self-published authors are the literary equivalent of self-made men and women.  Self-publishing serves as an alternative to the sluggish world of mainstream publishing.

These "author-services companies" don't offer publishing deals, advances, or publicity agents because there's no inventory and no investment. It's all done via the internet, which allows publishers to print copies of books per request.

Self-publishing offers anyone with a manuscript the opportunity to publish. Interested in self-publishing? Contact The Country Press.

Huge Demand for Short Run Book Printing

Joseph Coupal - Tuesday, April 03, 2012

Short-run printing applications don’t just apply to books. Short run printing can be applied to other applications such as catalogs, posters and packages, children’s books, text books and municipalities.

Self publishing has meant that there is now a huge demand for short run printing. With the Country Press, self publishers and publishers now have access to the kind of print quality that only comes from the equipment of large scale commercial printers.

Short run printing is best for publishers who have a small distribution channel. Short run printing means that publishing houses can order just a dozen copies. If those books sell well, order more.  A short run book printer can make the world of difference to publishing companies, because being able to order a short run book can mean the difference between printing and not printing the book. When a publisher can order less than a thousand units, publishing companies save a huge amount of money.
