Can You Make Money Self Publishing?

Joseph Coupal - Tuesday, July 17, 2012

Finishing your novel is just the first hurdle. Finding an agent or publisher willing to read your work and have it published is an even bigger challenge.

But do you even need a publisher? Here are a few comments about self publishing which is becoming an increasingly popular option.

Who's making money?

Probably the most successful of the self publishers to date is Amanda Hocking.

She wrote 17 novels around her day job but they were all rejected by publishers. So, in spring 2010 she began to self-publish them as ebooks. Less than a year later she'd sold well over a million copies and earned around $2 million.

EL James, author of Fifty Shades of Grey, took a slightly different self-publishing route. She paid for hardcopies of her work to be printed through a small Australian press. Yet now her trilogy has sold more than ten million copies worldwide.

These two self-publishers have turned their rejected novels into life-changing sums of money. But since their success, both have chosen to write through established publishing houses.

That suggests that the big money is still made by having the support of an editor, publicist and major book retailers, all of which are only really achievable with a publishing house.

How much does self-publishing really earn?

Of course, these are the biggest successes and suggest that everyone could do the same.

The writers' hub Taleist.com surveyed over 1,000 self-publishing authors and found that the average earnings are around $10,000 a year.

That's not a ton of money. But some things are worth more than cash for many authors.

You should choose to self publish through a proper and reputable publishing company. It helps to have support editing and designing your book as well as paying for the hard copies of your book to be printed.

Where do you start?

Okay, so you've written a book and you're ready to publish. What do you do next?

Publishing services for authors are available, and they will even help you design your cover.

Of course, simply making your book available is only the first step. You'll be competing with hundreds of thousands of other authors, so how you promote your work is key. So how do you market your masterpiece?

Self-promotion
The most successful self-publishing authors use blogs, Twitter, Facebook and other social platforms to advertise their book.

You can also find plenty of tips on self-publishing sites and in forums, but social media is the best platform, as you can create a buzz around your book.

Self Publishing is Often the Best Option for Authors

Joseph Coupal - Tuesday, June 26, 2012

In the past, the general feeling towards self publishing was leaning toward negative. There was, and still is in some cases, a certain level of trepidation when approaching a book that has gone straight from the author to the consumer, skipping the middle man entirely.

Mainly, this negativity stems from the belief that authors opt to self publish if they have been unsuccessful with traditional publishers. But today, this is less true as self-publishing has gone from the last option to the best option.

For one thing the book market has been on a steady decline with the revolutions of the technology market, and one of the developments that has kept reading relevant is eBook readers.

With e-books potentially leading the market from now on, traditionally published and self-published writers are on a level playing field.

In such a case, self publishing can hold many advantages above traditional publishing; a larger margin of the profit will make its way to your pocket for one thing, and there's also a certain level of freedom that accompanies managing your own book publishing.

Self-publishing allows book writing to be approached on a more personal level, even if the books aren't likely to achieve commercial success, authors can still connect with an audience on a much smaller scale.

If you, as an author, find yourself opting for or leaning toward self-publishing, contact The Country Press.

The "Golden Age" of Self Publishing

Joseph Coupal - Tuesday, June 05, 2012

The self-publishing seminar attracted panels and exhibitors offering the latest developments in the self-publishing field. At the seminar, the “The How, What, Where, and When of Print and EBooks” session heard that 2012 is part of the “golden age of self-publishing.” And there are stats to back that claim.

According to the newest figures of self published books produced, last year there were 211,269 self-published titles released, up from 133,036 in 2010.

The most popular genre in units sold is fiction (45%), but the nonfiction genre leads in sales (38%).

While e-books sold more of the percentage of books, paperbacks and hard covered books have the large percentage of sales.

Although the dream of most writers is to be signed by a major publisher and becoming a bestseller, more authors are becoming successful through self-publishing. Rather than carrying a stigma like in the past, self publishing portrays that an author wants to take things into their own hands.

Now that self-publishing can be profitable, and since it has been made more convenient, thought leaders, entrepreneurs, and story tellers have more means than ever to get their word out. To get your word out, contact The Country Press.
