Print on Demand has Changed Self Publishing

Joseph Coupal - Tuesday, August 06, 2013

Recently an article was published in Forbes Magazine on the advantages of printing on demand for self publishers. We thought we would share the important points from that article with you:

Self-publishing in general is turning the traditional publishing industry on its head, but print-on-demand services, or POD, are making every writer’s dream of becoming a published author achievable. There are some obvious reasons for this:  the out-of-pocket cost of printing one book at a time is relatively less expensive than taking a chance on a 1,000-book run.

Not long ago, an aspiring book writer rejected by traditional publishing houses had only one alternative: vanity publishing. For $5,000, $10,000, or more, an author could have his manuscript edited and published, provided that they agreed to buy a few thousand or  more copies themselves. Often these book copies ended up not being used.  Digital publishing and print on demand have significantly reduced the cost of producing a book.

Some believe the advantages of POD for authors is saving the publishing industry.

Author Control

Print on Demand is not just for authors who can’t find a publisher. Author Mark Edwards self-published one book The Magpies after working with a publishing house to publish another. For him it was a matter of expediency.

“When I finished The Magpies I wanted to get it out quickly, partly because I wanted to build momentum before my other book came out.”  The Magpies has sold over 130,000 copies and has been in the top 10 for over two months.

A Time article reported that e-book self-publishing is growing at four times the rate of other forms of self-publishing – and some authors are making more money that way.

There are many advantages of print on demand including access and author control, and affordability. Many authors are jumping onto POD publishing as a low-cost, low-labor way to turn their books into profitable products.

Short Run Book Printing – What is it for?

Joseph Coupal - Tuesday, July 30, 2013

Short-run book printing is the printing of fewer books, anywhere from 11 to 5000 copies, for less money. Short run books are the perfect option for authors and publishers who need fewer books fast, for those with smaller budgets, or for authors with smaller storage spaces.

Publishing companies who have books or authors in limited distribution, have orders to fulfill, or who want advanced copies of books will use short run book printing. Self-publishers will also often choose  short run printing for book signings and fairs, to re-stock inventory,  to have advance copies, or to have books available for marketing and promotions.

With the onset of digital book printing, where there is more flexibility in printing and editing, a huge demand has developed for short run books. With short run printing, self-published authors, traditional authors, and publishing companies now can get books printed with the  kind of print quality that used to only come from expensive, large scale commercial printers.

Whether you are a large scale publishing companies or an individual author, if you think short run books can fill your need, contact The Country Press.

Short Run Book Printers for A Smaller Distribution Channel

Joseph Coupal - Thursday, July 18, 2013

If you are an author, self-published author, or a publishing house that needs a book with faster turn- around than traditional printing can offer, choose short run book printing. For advance copies, or for a smaller amount of books to fulfill order obligations, book signings, book fairs, or to use as giveaways, short run book printing is your best option.

Commercial printers or publishers make their money on printing large quantities of books. But rarely can a new author or self-published author afford such a commitment. Short run books gives you the option of printing a smaller number of books at one time. Printing smaller quantities may cause the books to be more expensive per book, but with short run printing, you can print anywhere from 11 to 5000 copies. This makes short run printing very economical.

Today, there are more self-published authors than ever before. Therefore, more authors and trades people are interested in short run book printing for promoting their books.  In fact, for many, the option of short run book printing often means the difference between printing or not printing your book. Short run book printers are the solution for those with a smaller distribution channel.

Bound Gallery’s for New Book Marketing

Joseph Coupal - Tuesday, June 18, 2013

Bound galleys are unedited versions of your book and are used to get book reviews before the publication date of your book. Bound galleys are used by authors and self-publishers to generate publicity for marketing the book before it is published. Bound galley books are sent to book reviewers, booksellers, and distributors so they can read and make decisions about your book.

Publishers can send anywhere from 11-5000 bound galleys for a prepublication marketing campaign. Book galleys, bound manuscripts, and ARCs (advanced reading copies) all serve the same purpose, but they are a little different. So, when submitting your pre-published book for review, be sure to check the guidelines.

For your book to successfully sell, the book must garner publicity. The bound book galley is a necessary component to this. The best marketing that can’t be bought is word of mouth. If people talk about your book before it comes out, word can spread quickly, and readers will be eager to buy it.

A bound galley is the pre-publication version of an upcoming published book that is a printed, perfectly bound book used to marketing the book to reviewers, bookstore distributors and buyers. For more information on Bound Gallery’s, contact The Country Press.

Advanced Copy Books Help you Market Your Book

Joseph Coupal - Thursday, June 13, 2013

If you are self-publishing your book, selling advanced copies of your book gives you a good idea of how many books to print. With advanced copy books you can sell your book in advance when it is in the last stage of editing with short run printing.

If you want to sell a book that is not in print, and won’t be few 6 months or so, advanced copy books can help.

You can make sales and collect money by using advanced copy books as your marketing tool. Get the book out there if your book is in the last stage of editing and if you either have a publishing deal or are choosing to self-publish.

Every self-published author would love to sell some books, so every self-published author loves presales. Presales can help with the expenses involved in publishing you book, including final printing, marketing, office materials and more.

Authors are often able to sell enough advance copies of their books to start making a profit before trying to stock bookshelves. But best of all, you through advanced copy books, and presales, you will have more of an understanding of how your book is going to sell. Then when it comes to the final printing, you will have a better understanding of how many to order and where you have been the most successful in you marketing efforts.

For more information on advanced copy books, contact The Country Press.
