The "Golden Age" of Self Publishing

Joseph Coupal - Tuesday, June 05, 2012

The self-publishing seminar attracted panels and exhibitors offering the latest developments in the self-publishing field. At the seminar, the “The How, What, Where, and When of Print and EBooks” session heard that 2012 is part of the “golden age of self-publishing.” And there are stats to back that claim.

According to the newest figures of self published books produced, last year there were 211,269 self-published titles released, up from 133,036 in 2010.

The most popular genre in units sold is fiction (45%), but the nonfiction genre leads in sales (38%).

While e-books sold more of the percentage of books, paperbacks and hard covered books have the large percentage of sales.

Although the dream of most writers is to be signed by a major publisher and becoming a bestseller, more authors are becoming successful through self-publishing. Rather than carrying a stigma like in the past, self publishing portrays that an author wants to take things into their own hands.

Now that self-publishing can be profitable, and since it has been made more convenient, thought leaders, entrepreneurs, and story tellers have more means than ever to get their word out. To get your word out, contact The Country Press.

It is now easier than ever to sell works in all sorts of formats, in all sorts of markets, on all sorts of devices, in some cases instantly. Publishing is changing. The concept of a book is changing.”

Publishers and Authors Interviewed About Short Run Books and More

Joseph Coupal - Tuesday, April 24, 2012

At the London Book Fair, PrintWeek asks book production professionals about their evolving print requirements.

Are Publishers and/or  Authors producing shorter run books, more frequently?

Absolutely, yes.  There’s a push for short runs and faster runs. This is where a smaller publishing company come in. Sometimes we only need 20 copies. We would rather have tight stock where we know we can replenish it. Of course, we will plan and aim to sell ‘x’ number of copies based on expectations and the level of promotion for any particular title, but we don’t just print books and hope to sell them.

In the case of paperbacks, we are producing a lot of short run books. For short-runs the numbers we are printing is changing all the time. It was up to 500 last year, it’s 900 now, next year it will probably be 2,500. Reprint quantities are reducing while the amount of orders is increasing. We’ve been doing short-run production for about three years now. Titles that might have been out of print are still in stock. Our print quantities are shorter than the page extents.

Do you require your print suppliers to provide additional services?

There is greater call for our suppliers or publishing companies to help with fulfillment. This might mean making direct deliveries and occasionally we require storage.

Often we need the printer/publisher to  fulfill the order and deliver books to the warehouse, ensuring they don’t go out of stock.

If your publishing company needs help with short run book printing, or additional services, contact The Country Press, Inc.

50 Shades of Self Publishing

Joseph Coupal - Tuesday, April 10, 2012

First-time author E.L. James was offered $5 million dollars last month for the movie rights to her self-published novel, Fifty Shades of Grey. This self published trilogy has taken off in print and in e-book form.

The novel's success may also have something to do with our collective love of the underdog. The publishing history of Fifty Shades of Grey is a rags-to-riches story. But in America we have had so many self made, self publishers, Mark Twain among them.

Self-publishing success stories are an American tradition, one in which the revolutionary/genius/outsider triumphs. From Stephen Day in 1640 who used the first printing press to publish editions of the Bay Psalm Book to Ben Franklin’s self-published paperbound pamphlet Poor Richard's Almanac. And in 1776, Thomas Paine self published "Common Sense," that sold over 500,000 copies and helped start the American Revolution.

Self-published authors are the literary equivalent of self-made men and women.  Self-publishing serves as an alternative to the sluggish world of mainstream publishing.

These "author-services companies" don't offer publishing deals, advances, or publicity agents because there's no inventory and no investment. It's all done via the internet, which allows publishers to print copies of books per request.

Self-publishing offers anyone with a manuscript the opportunity to publish. Interested in self-publishing? Contact The Country Press.
